What Is Claude?
Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. It is designed to be helpful, harmless, and honest — and it excels at tasks that require reading, writing, reasoning, and analysis. For small business owners, Claude is one of the most capable tools available for day-to-day business writing and thinking tasks.
Why Claude Stands Out
1. Exceptionally Strong Writing Quality
Claude produces natural, professional, and nuanced writing. Whether you need a client proposal, an employee handbook section, or a customer service response, Claude's output rarely needs heavy editing. It understands tone and context well — the difference between a warm follow-up email and a formal legal notice.
2. Long Document Handling
Claude can read and work with very long documents in a single conversation. You can paste in a contract, a lease, a supplier agreement, or an entire employee handbook and ask Claude to:
- Summarize the key points
- Flag unusual or risky clauses
- Rewrite a specific section in plain English
- Compare two versions
This is especially valuable for business owners who don't have an attorney on staff for routine document review.
3. Nuanced Reasoning
Claude handles complex, multi-part questions well. You can describe a business problem in plain language — a difficult employee situation, a pricing decision, a lease negotiation — and get a thoughtful, balanced analysis with options and trade-offs.
4. Honest About Uncertainty
Claude will tell you when it doesn't know something or when you should verify with a professional. This matters for business decisions — you want a tool that flags its limitations rather than confidently giving you bad information.
5. Built With Enterprise Trust in Mind
Anthropic offers paid plans (Team, Enterprise) and an API where customer inputs are not used to train Claude's models. On the consumer Claude.ai plans, training-data settings have changed over time — check your account settings under Privacy to confirm the current behavior. For sensitive business content (revenue figures, personnel issues, client data), the Team plan or API give the strongest protections.
6. Reads Files and Images
Claude.ai accepts file uploads — PDFs, Word docs, spreadsheets, images, and screenshots. You can drop in a contract, a photo of a bill, a CSV of expenses, or a screenshot of a confusing report and ask Claude to read, explain, or extract from it. This is one of the most-used features for SMB owners.
7. Artifacts and Projects
Artifacts opens documents, code, charts, or simple webpages in a side panel you can revise. Useful for drafting a proposal you'll iterate on, building a one-page handout, or generating a simple chart from data.
Projects save context (your company description, tone guidelines, recurring background) so every conversation in that project starts already up to speed. Ideal for keeping voice consistent across all your customer-facing writing.

Limitations to Know
- Web search is available, but Perplexity is still better for research. Claude.ai can search the web when you ask it to, but Perplexity is purpose-built for research and surfaces citations more clearly. Use Claude when you want to write or analyze; use Perplexity when you want to find and verify.
- Knowledge cutoff — outside of web search, Claude relies on training data with a cutoff date. For time-sensitive information, ask Claude to search the web or verify independently.
- Math-heavy analysis — Claude can explain concepts and reason through finances, but is not a replacement for a spreadsheet or accountant for precise financial modeling.
- It can still be wrong. Even when Claude sounds confident, it can hallucinate facts, citations, statistics, or legal/regulatory specifics. Verify anything you would not want to defend in front of a customer, employee, or regulator.
Getting Started
The fastest way to experience Claude's value is to take a task you currently do manually — drafting a client email, writing a job posting, creating a checklist — and let Claude do a first draft. Most business owners are surprised by how close the first result is to what they would have written themselves.
